What I Learned From My Summer Internship

smu_1 There’s officially only three more days left of my summer.. I know, depressing when I put it like that. But it’s true, and I wouldn’t have traded this summer for the world. It started and I was working like a chicken with my head cut off at two jobs, on top of my first internship in the fashion industry at South Moon Under, and of course this blog. I was exhausted, worn out, and spread thin about 99.9% of the time. I decided to quit (both) of my jobs and devote my time to my summer at SMU. Thank goodness I did because this lead to being there 5 days a week and getting to work in a different department as well. An internship is a tricky thing, and not all people support them. I’m here to tell you that if you don’t support them (MOM!) you are absolutely crazy! I would not have been able to experience and witness this industry any other way. Other then saying it was amazing, here are a few things and tips I have put together after reflecting on my summer at SMU:

1. Ask questions! It is better to ask about something that you don’t understand then to mess it up, trust me on this one. Just don’t ruin it, make sure your questions are valid..

2. Take notes! This is a huge one for me. I kept a folder and notebook my entire summer while at SMU on everything I learned, heard, or thought would be important. I also kept a copy of advertisements and branding that I loved.

3. Talk to your co-workers! Again, don’t overstep it, but mingling and socializing in a new environment is extremely important. I made sure to take time to meet and talk to everyone in the Creative and Marketing building where I was. And this is the way I got to work in Web Production department. Speak up my friends!

4. Always ask, “What else can I do?” It’s easy. Just see what you can help people with, even if it isn’t in your department. After helping Kyle, the Director of Visual Merchandising, on something really easy I am going to be interring for her this winter break!

These are just some simple, easy things that I’ve learned from my first internship that I think are pretty easy to remember when it comes to my next endeavor in the fashion industry. I want to say thank you to everyone who made my summer at SMU so wonderful and I am so thankful for the friendships that I’ve made. A special shout out to Taylor and Molly for mentoring me and always being willing to help and listen (even when I messed up, because we all know I had way more mistakes than I should have.) and to Josh for teaching me everything I know when it comes to copywriting.
